Annotation: The study showed significantly higher emissions ratings from the air above the oil and natural gas developments on the Denver-Julesburg Basin than was previously estimated by the EPA and state agencies. Estimates were taken via aircraft flying over the area of development. Disturbingly, benzene emissions could be up to seven (7) times higher than previously estimated. Benzene can have severe detrimental effects on human health and is a known carcinogen. The study attributes a startling 100% of nonmethane (propane, n-butane, i and n-pentane, and benzene) emissions to oil and natural gas development.
