"Ion Exchange: Ion exchange is typically used to deionize, [or soften], and desalinate water for residential use... The ion exchange process effectively removes arsenic, heavy metals, nitrates, radium, salts, uranium, and other elements, but cannot remove organic compounds. Since divalent ions are favored over sodium by the resin for replacement, secondary treatment for SAR (sodicity) is required. Hydrometrics, Incorporated developed a four-step treatment process to treat sodium, water hardness, and remove metals and contaminants of concern (i.e., ammonia, barium, iron, manganese, strontium, and zinc)." [See the source document for a description of this four-step process.] |
